Jesus Is the Same Forever

Oral soon realized that nothing had changed; “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8). The plan was still for His disciples to accomplish “greater works” today than He had done. (See John 14:12.) Greater works through Oral Roberts! Jesus had transmitted His power to His disciples then, and Jesus wanted the same power to be with His disciples today—Oral was sure of it!

Oral’s days of prayer and study also brought him to these Scriptures from John 14: “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you” (verse 18), and “The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name…shall teach you all things” (verse 26). Jesus comforted and healed the people when He was on the earth. Then, He sent the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, who would provide the “greater works” so that believers could heal people and set them free just as Jesus had done! The full significance of the baptism of the Holy Spirit came to Oral in a way he had never considered before. He realized that the power he had been waiting for had been with him all along. “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you” (Acts 1:8). Oral had had the Lord’s healing, transforming power all along; he just hadn’t known it.

What about those of you reading these glorious testimonies of God’s great generals? These men and women of God discovered His power that is available to believers today. The same power that raised Christ Jesus from the dead is the power that abides within each of us! The power that Jesus gave the seventy disciples to go and heal diseases and cast out demons dwells in you! You can make—you must make—a difference in the world around you as a disciple of Christ today. Look into His Word and embrace the truth of Jesus’ statements to you. “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you” (emphasis added).

Oral’s Greatest Discovery

During Oral’s time of searching the Gospels and also the rest of the New Testament, a verse leapt off of the page and into his spirit. It was the second verse of 3 John: “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” Oral read the words again and was astounded. In the early Pentecostal church, poverty was often worn as an “honor badge” for the Lord. In all of his reading of the Bible, Oral had never grasped that Scripture verse before. He was certain that those words were for him—the answer to his questions about God’s desires for His children.
